There is always a call for new, innovative technologies that can save lives. At the Fire Middle East Conference, we take time to highlight best practices and showcase the newest wave of technologies, one such example would be the new trending Emergency Fire Blankets.

One such location where Emergency Fire Blankets are particularly effective is in hot dry locales, such as those in the Middle East, and more specifically, building sites, within the Middle East.

At the Fire Middle East Conference, Sandy Dweik, CEO of Thomas-Bell Wright International hosted a panel titled, “Codes and Compliance”, exploring the relationship between contractors, commercial property owners, residents within a property, and all those, who are present between the conception of a building, and individuals living in it. In the Middle East, spectacular high-rise buildings and the like are currently being built en masse, and demand stringent codes and compliances, to ensure individuals are safe whilst working in these dry, dangerous conditions.

To ensure safety, one such technology that proves effective is an innovative emergency fire blanket. But how do emergency fire blankets work to keep a construction site safe?

Emergency Fire Blankets: How do they work?

A fire blanket is usually made from a consistent material, either fibreglass, wool, or silicone. Each one has slight variations, however, are all used in the same way.

The first step is to stay calm, and assess the situation, to fold out the fire blanket effectively.

The second step is to assess the intensity of the fire. If the fire has grown at a rapid pace already, the fire blanket may not be effective.

The third step, is, if not already applicable and easy to do so, quickly grab protective gloves or other protective wear.

The fourth step is to carefully drape the fire blanket over the flames, ensuring that it completely covers the fire, and will starve the fire of oxygen in the process.

Once the fire is extinguished, leave the emergency fire blanket in place, to ensure the fire is unable to start again. Further exposure to oxygen may restart the fire, so this is an important last step.

Innovative Technologies and Best Practices

Wendy Otway at the Fire Middle East Conference introducing the Best Practices panel.

At the Fire Middle East Conference 2024, Wendy Otway, at the time, Head Editor of Fire Middle East Magazine, hosted the panel titled “Best Practice and Innovation in Fire Safety Engineering”, she was joined by Mohammed Aldajani, Fire Protection Engineering Consultant, alongside Mustafa Alfakih, Associate Fire Protection Engineer at Jensen Hughes, as well as Murtada Aldarweesh, CEO, Fire & Life Safety Consultant at MAD Consultants.

The official description for this panel was:

From design, to engineering and construction, we explore the importance of developing fire safety engineering strategy and how communications between relevant parties, new technologies and processes help to engineer safe high rise buildings.

In actuality, this panel saw the consultants discussing the various processes that go into fire safety, and what technologies are available to support citizens in the Middle East, including discussing various active and passive fire protection and suppression systems. Although the panel was focused on larger buildings and giga-projects, the importance of items such as Emergency Fire Blankets, Sprinkler systems, and the like. It is clear, and evident that innovative technologies, and the use of these technologies in correct, appropriate ways, such as the easy-to-utilize methodology of an emergency fire blanket, will be required to further the fire marketplace, looking to the future of the Middle East.
