The dangers of kitchen tools and fire: Sebastian Ukleja

A man taking about fire safety

Sebastian Ukleja, Testing Manager, shares an experience during the Fire Middle East Conference in which a large fire broke out in his home and how work at the Emirates Safety Laboratory seeks to keep people safer.

The humble frying pan is a versatile tool used in a home kitchen or a commercial setting.

Whether it’s used for cooking a meal at home or in a professional kitchen, the importance of proper usage and maintenance cannot be overstated.

Let’s start with a personal story about the significance of a frying pan.

About 15 years ago, while my wife was cooking dinner, our daughter, who was just a small baby at that time, suddenly woke up and started to cry.

The Fire Hazard

In the moment’s panic, my wife left the kitchen unattended with the frying pan and oil on the stove.

This resulted in the kitchen filling with black smoke, creating a dangerous fire situation.

Fortunately, a disaster was averted due to proper training, and our home remained safe. This experience highlighted the potential dangers associated with kitchen equipment and the importance of proper usage to prevent fires.

Moving on from personal experiences, let’s shift our focus to the commercial kitchen environment.

In commercial kitchens, chefs like Hos, who work in restaurants, face unique challenges. Owners of such establishments often try to cut corners, compromising on the quality of equipment and infrastructure. This can have serious implications, especially when it comes to crucial systems such as the kitchen extraction system.

In many commercial kitchens, the extraction system plays a vital role in maintaining a safe and healthy environment. However, when corners are cut, problems can arise.

Grease buildup in the kitchen ducting system, a common occurrence in commercial kitchens, can pose a serious fire hazard if not properly maintained. The combination of heat, flammable grease, and a poorly maintained extraction system can lead to a potentially dangerous situation.

Proper maintenance and adherence to safety guidelines are essential in both home and commercial kitchen settings.

Ensuring that kitchen equipment is used and maintained correctly can prevent disasters and create a safe and healthy cooking environment for everyone involved.
